The South Delta Secondary junior boys capped off a great season with a fourth-place finish at the provincial rugby championships last week in Abbotsford.

The Sun Devils opened the tournament with a dominant 19-0 win over St. Michaels which kept them on the championship-side of the draw.

Up next was Robert Batman and again, SDSS played a strong game winning 26-10 setting up a shot a medal on Friday afternoon.

In a back-and-forth contest, St. George’s prevailed 36-24.

“Going into the provincial tournament, the junior team was not a favourite to win. After finishing eighth last year, the team was looking to improve,” said head coach Sean Waymouth. “They played hard against Robert Bateman, the ultimate champion, in the second game, but came up short in the end. Keeping the game close showed that the team could hold their own against the best in the province. In the bronze medal game, they stayed close to perennial favourite St. George’s but falling short of a medal.

By finishing fourth, they improved four spots over last season, which is a tremendous feat to accomplish.”

The junior Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams this year included: Charlie Blackwood, Jared Brown, Darby Catapang, David Christian, Thomas Dannhauser, Daniel Delf, Kayden Dunn, Luke Dunn, Marcus Fevang, Coen Gilchrist, Nate Gower, Charlie Iverson, Will Jollymore, Brady Mantle, Calum Moennick, Ryan Moore, Merrick Petersen, Kyler Purbs, Hudson Robinson, Quinn Sjoberg, Anthony Soares, Alex Taylor, James Wheeler, Parker Wrathall, Nate Young, Erik Beglaw, Tim Blewett, Nicholas Bosco, Sharman Chauhan, Liam Dawson, Theoren Dolejsi, Porter Draper, Rhys Dupuis, Thomas Hewson, Raahil Jaffer, Cohen Kyle, Brayden Lee, Marcus Loeser, Cameron Macveigh, Henry Perry, Kelton Todhunter, Conover Van Iperen, Samuel Woeste.
